- Discuss safety issues relevant to walking on a farm (link to safety information)
- Plan for appropriate dress for being outdoors on a farm
Pre-K and K-1 Meet the Farm and Plants and Animals
Before
- Match images and names of common farm animals and food plants
- Use superlatives to compare animal sizes
- Plant some seeds to watch them grow
After
- Draw pictures to show how a food changes appearance from the garden to the table
- Write something new learned on the farm about a plant or animal
- Play charades about things you saw or did on the farm
- Download and printout our coloring pages and discuss the differences in our farm animals
2-3 Soils, Cycles and Seasons
Before
- Create a Know, Want to Know and Learned (KWL) chart before the tour (Three columns on a large piece of paper where students list what they KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, and last column for after the tour for what they LEARNED)
- Discuss what is in different types of soil
- Create wheels charts to show plant and animal cycles
After
- Complete KWL chart from above
- Draw pictures to show how a food changes appearance from the garden to the table
- Write something new learned on the farm about a plant or animal
4-5 Walk Back in Time
Before
- Create a KWL chart before the tour (Three columns on a large piece of paper where students list what they KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, and last column for after the tour for what they LEARNED)
- Review basic periods of time from Native Americans to Modern including Colonial, Civil War, and Industrial Revolution (when farmers began using machines)
- Discuss changes from one period to another: clothing, houses, transportation, entertainment, etc.
After
- Complete KWL chart from above
- Create a map of the tour to identify each period of time presented (hint: there were at least six)
- Explore forms of transportation from various periods of time
18th Century
Before
- Create a KWL chart before the tour (Three columns on a large piece of paper where students list what they KNOW, WANT TO KNOW, and last column for after the tour for what they LEARNED)
- Create a list of items needed to move to a new home in Colonial America keeping in mind that there are no houses or stores where they are going.
- Research period clothing, homes and furnishing, activities.
After
- Complete KWL chart from above
- Research a game or skill from the period to present in detail to the class
- Discuss what the settlers did to make them so successful. Include such ideas and making what they needed, recycling, and willingness to change.
